DAY 1 – Arrival at Kalpa
Your adventure begins with a morning scenic drive from Kalpa through the stunning landscapes of Kinnaur valley. Once you arrive in Kalpa, meet and greet our local partner and after a crazy road drive, check into your cozy accommodation overlooking the mesmerising views of the surrounding mountains.
The rest of the day is free for you to acclimatise to the altitude while exploring the village's architecture: traditional houses made out of stone and wood, especially the unique slate or wooden plank roofs which have endured the brunt of harsh mountain weather for centuries.
Walk through the village and visit the ancient village temple dedicated to the local goddess Mathi Devi, whom the locals believe takes care of the village and all who inhabit it.
Dinner
Towards the evening, meet up with everyone for a welcome dinner featuring authentic Kinnauri cuisine, while taking in the magnificent views of the sunset over the Himalayan mountains.
DAY 2 – Monastery, Mountain Trails & Baspa Riverside
Breakfast
Start your day with an early breakfast. You will then visit the holy Kagyupa Temple (Chitkul Monastery) which houses an age-old image of Shakyamuni Buddha that has been worshipped by the people of this village for ages.
Your guide will explain the relevance of Buddhist rituals in a predominantly Hindu region and how different religions have coexisted here for centuries in harmony.
Following our visit of the monastery in Chitkul, we'll enjoy a nature walk led by our guide along some specially selected mountain paths that allow great views of the entire valley. Your local guide will point out local plant and animal species as well as explain the fragile mountain ecology of the area.
Lunch
By noon, start the descent to the crystal clear Baspa River for a scenic picnic lunch on the river bank. This afternoon is free to relax on the riverbank with a bit of catch and release trout fishing (equipment will be provided) or join an optional guided walk through local apple orchards and the potato farms that are the economic mainstay of this village community.
Dinner
Experience dinner and cooking demonstrations where you will learn to cook some of the signature dishes of the region. Have a hearty dinner and doze off to sleep for what awaits the next day truly stands mesmerising.
