One of the most dreadful feelings which we all have experienced several times in our lives: the feeling of being fatigued. It's 3:00PM on a Tuesday. The computer screen is filled with unread emails, Slacks, and work-load. The cup of coffee is now cold. The strain is building in your eyes. You're not just tired; you're burned-out so much that even sleeping until Sunday won't be enough to fix it.

The modern lifestyle exists at a frenetic, hyper-connected pace. As humans, we are accessible 24/7 and are always on-the-go. Most of us live in cities made of robotic traffic jams, unreal deadlines, being chained on our phones, checking endless notifications. When we eventually crash, our first instinct while booking a vacation is to get away to another over-crowded, overrated destination. Then we have to deal with busy hotels, noisy restaurant environments, and large crowds while trying to see all the sights. We then return home, feeling like we need a "vacation" from our vacation.

To fully recover from corporate burnout, what you really need is a complete reset. To slow down to an ancient human’s pace, which only exists in a family-run, rural homestay.

Why an Authentic Village Stay is the Ultimate Digital Detox Vacation

Our nervous systems remain in a constant high alert whenever we experience severe corporate burnout. In order for true recovery to occur, we need to remove ourselves from the very cause of that stress. This is where a week-long homestay in the countryside comes into play, providing something that a typical hotel room never could.

An Organic Digital Detox

It’s not always about avoiding your phone. As when you get outside the city walls, that habit to endlessly scroll or check for new notifications starts to fizzle on its own. The frantic buzz of technology melts away and gets replaced by the gentle whispers of the wind rustling through the trees, the distant chirping of birds, and the soft hum of village life. It’s a disconnect, a refreshing absence of all the static.

Exiting Clock Time and Entering Natural Time

While life back home is run by the tick of the clock - meetings, appointments, deadlines, at a homestay, time simply becomes more elastic. There’s no rush.

You wake up with the first light spilling into your room, eat when your stomach rumbles, and rest when your body feels tired. Tapping into this simple, human flow allows your thoughts the room they need to unwind and clear out the mental clutter.

Real, Rooted human connections

Luxury hotels are built for excessive spending. Rural homestays are built for connection and heart. Staying with local families provides that sense of grounding, the necessary reminder of what really matters. Whether it's sharing a delicious, freshly made meal, learning about unique local traditions, or simply chatting with your host on the veranda as the sun sets. These authentic, unhurried exchanges with local people offer the sense of clarity that’s often lost in our fast-paced urban existence.

What A Day of Recovery Looks Like

When you start your stay at a homestay at RSI, you step into an alternative world. The experience is far removed from "wellness retreat" experiences that involve waking at 5:00 am for yoga (although if that's what you want). It actually means simply being present while allowing yourself time to heal slowly, intuitively.

How do people recover? Typically, they start their healing process divided between the day like this:

Mornings for Grounding and a New Beginning

When you wake up, you will be doing so at approximately sunrise, rather than to the ringing of an alarm. As the first sunlight peeks over the horizon you'll have the opportunity to stand on your porch (as shown in the picture below) and breathe in cool clean air. There are scents from the rain and wet soil all around you. For many of us, this type of moment is new. In fact, we've never experienced anything remotely similar before.

In addition to standing outside and taking a few breaths of the cool morning air, there is another important part of starting each day. Each day, after the morning sun has risen, you will take a short barefoot walk across the dew-covered lawn. While walking barefoot across the dew-covered lawn, you will enjoy a warm, freshly brewed cup of coffee or tea made from locally-grown ingredients. These simple moments allow our bodies to begin to awaken to the sensory details of our environment.

Afternoons for Sustenance & Disconnect

For most people, by mid-day, they will have eaten a large amount of food. At our village homestays, eating meals takes place at a leisurely pace. Most days, you will eat three meals per day with your host family. Meals are typically prepared using the organically grown vegetables and fruits. You get a chance to savour local meals like jowar bhakri (a traditional indian flatbread) made with locally-grown jowar flour, along with some steamed spinach made from fresh leaves gathered from their own backyard. To add flavor to your dal, your hosts use a variety of locally-sourced herbs and spices.

Following your meal, you will likely need to go somewhere quiet in order to relax. Oftentimes, finding a good spot involves sitting under a shaded area near trees. It is common for individuals who come to RSI homestays to spend hours reading books without looking at their phones. Some guests also report spending several hours sleeping peacefully, knowing that no one expects them to respond to anyone immediately.

Evenings for Self-reflection & Relaxation

During the two hours prior to sunset, choose to take a leisurely stroll through the surroundings and engage in conversation with the neighbors. Although dinner will often occur relatively early in the evening, it is not uncommon for the rest of the evening to remain calm and quiet. Mostly, sleep will knock prior to 10:00 pm. You then drift off to sleep in peace and quiet, a deep and unbroken sleep that your body had been craving.

Guests typically plan to spend at least seven consecutive days in this manner. Rather than merely resting themselves, their bodies and minds are reconstructed.
